1 million pounds of tainted ground beef recalled

E. coli O157:H7 is the one of the most notorious bacteria responsible for causing severe cramps and bloody diarrhea, dehydration and sometimes kidney failure. The symptoms are worse in children and older people, and especially in people who have another illness.  The most common way to get E. coli infection is by eating contaminated food or meat that is not cooked properly.  Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that ground beef products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 and can cause serious illness.

About recall
The Valley Meat Company of Modesto has voluntarily recalled approximately 1,000,000 pounds of ground beef products because of the E. coli O157:H7 contamination that made seven people sick so far. The recall was prompted after the California Department of Health alerted the USDA to a number of E. coli illnesses reported in mid-July. The beef patties and ground beef were sold in California, Texas, Oregon, Arizona and internationally.
