I talked to my brother this morning, who lives in a city called Pune in India, and learned that he is quarantined in his home. No, he did not do anything wrong or he has any kind of contagious disease. Basically, Pune is on high alert due to highest number of swine flu deaths in the country. Deadly swine flu which started from Mexico in April 2009 has affected people at global level in just few months. This is the reason schools; offices and business are closed to have some control over the swine flu situation.
As you know, India has second largest population in the world, just behind China. Once epidemic spreads in such a populated country, it can be extremely difficult to control it. I thought, I would write on swine flu situation in India and therefore, I was browsing Indian news papers for that matter. I came across with very informative article “10 home remedies of swine flu” and thought that I must share this information with you. You must have read my previous post, wherein I wrote on many home therapies lately and to be honest, I am big on home therapies. Also, home therapies on swine flu would be of global interest as pharma companies are still working on right solution for swine flu, especially from vaccine point of view. Here is the summary of the home therapies from the article:
Basil (known as Tulsi in Hindi): Basil or Tulsi is a holy plant in India and my mom use to water a Tulsi plant every morning after her daily prayers. Its medicinal name is Ocimum sanctum. Chew five washed leaves of basil everyday in the morning. Basil gives good flavor to India tea and has many medicinal properties, such as it keeps throat and lungs clear. Also, it increases your immunity and hence helps in fighting against infections.
Giloi: Giloi is available in plants and possess positive effects on other herbs. Its medicinal name is Tinospora cordifolia. It is recommended to add a foot-long branch of giloi to 5-6 leaves of basil and boil in water. Boil it till medicinal properties of giloi are extracted in water, usually 15-20 minutes. Add black pepper and sendha (salt used during religious fasts), rock or black salt, or Misri (crystalised sugar like lumps to make it sweet) according to your taste. Cool it and drink this concoction, while still warm. You will be surprised by the effectiveness of this cocktail against infections. Baba Ram Dev, one of the gurus, teaching prayanam (kind of yoga) in India, recommended this medicine against swine flu.
Camphor (known as Kapoor in Hindi): Camphor is another material used in Indian religious ceremonies. It is usually available in form of tablets and has medicinal advantages. Swallow tablet sized camphor with water, once or twice a month. It might be difficult for children to swallow it because of the taste, so add it to their food like bowl of cheerios or mashed potato. It is suggested that camphor should not to be taken every day; once each season or once a month should be sufficient.
Garlic: I have already written couple of posts on advantages of garlic as home medicine. Every time I read about garlic, it surprises me more. Take two...
pods of garlic first thing in the morning with luke warm water. It will help your gastro problems as well as your immunity.
Milk: I am a vegetarian and milk is so called a complete diet for vegetarians. My mother recommended taking two glass of milk, each day. If you are not allergic to milk, take a glass of hot or luke warm milk every night with small amount of turmeric (called haldi in hindi). My mother use to make this mixture, whenever I got hurt like fell down, etc. Turmeric is another herb, which increase immunity and I suppose with milk, it strengthens our immune system.
Aloe Vera: It is commonly available and is part of many herbal products like cosmetics. Thick and long, cactus-like leaves of Aloe Vera contain an odorless gel like material. Daily intake of one teaspoon of gel with water can boost your immunity. Also, it can be highly beneficial for your skin and joint pains.
Homeopathic medicines: Homeopathic medicines are a different class of therapeutic treatments that are commonly available in India. Couples of medicines, which are common in preventing common flu virus, include Pyrogenium 200 and Inflenzium 200. Take five tablets, three times a day, or two-three drops three times a day. It is recommended to consult with your physician before taking medicine.
Pranayam: I mentioned this term in Gioli section. Well, it is a type of yoga and should be done under guidance, if you are not familiar with the techniques. Daily practicing Pranayam will improve your overall health include immunity.
Citrus Fruits: Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C or ascorbic acid, which helps to increase immunity. Particularly, Gooseberry (called as Amla in Hindi) is a good fruit to eat either in raw or juice form.
Basic Care: As per center for disease control (CDC) basic care like washing your hands with soap and water, avoid touching contaminated surfaces, avoiding close contact with infected people and covering your nose and mouth, while sneezing can help you to prevent from being infected.
I think you can consider home remedies that increase immunity as an addition to your daily diet. Increase your immunity; in general, will benefit you in long term, even after this swine flu crisis is over. With that note, enjoy your time and Healthy eating!
