Does exercise fit in your daily schedule?


The importance of exercise to have a healthy life can not be over emphasized.  The amazing part I like about US is, I can see people running and biking in parks or around lakes most of time.  Also, health center can speak to how many people are exercising on daily basis.  A recent study took me on surprise, which stated that only 5% of American adults do some type of vigorous physical activity on any given day.  

About the study
Study was led by Catrine Tudor-Locke, PhD, of the Walking Behavior Laboratory, Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.  Researcher analyzed data collected on 79,652 men and women aged 20 and older.  Data was collected between 2003 and 2008 as part of the American Time Use Survey, a national telephone-based poll that asked people what they did in the preceding 24 hours. 

The survey findings are published online and in the October print issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine

Results of study
The study revealed that sedentary activities such as eating, drinking, watching TV, etc far exceeded the laborious exercise activities.  The split between sedentary activities include:

  • eating, drinking – 95.6%
  • watching television/movies – 80.1%
  • light activities such as washing, dressing and grooming – 78.9%
  • and driving a car, truck or motorcycle – 71.4%

activities revealed that:

  • food and drink preparation – 25.7%
  • lawn, garden and houseplant care – 10.6%
  • Only 5% of reported vigorous physical activities, including using cardiovascular exercise equipment (2.2%) and running (1.1%) 

The authors of the study said that “On any given day, most U.S. adults reported performing predominantly sedentary and light activities. The greatest prevalence for reported moderate activities was food and drink preparation for both men (12.8%) and women (37.6%).” 

The question is how many times a day do you exercise and for how long.  Diabetes and heart diseases are two most fatal diseases that you can control to a certain extent by regular exercises.  Now that football season has started there is more reason for the Americans to be a couch potato.  It is time that you take your health in your hand and do some exercise on regular basis.
