FIFA shares 3 fives to healthy lifestyle


2010 FIFA soccer world cup is in full swing at South Africa and I am sure you are enjoying the games. I think you will agree that the soccer players exhibit great level of fitness and energy.  The kind of stamina you need to play the soccer is unparalleled.  South African Department of Health in collaboration with the regional office of Africa, World Health Organization (WHO) prepared a brochure about role of food and physical activity to healthy life style as a part of their public awareness campaign. 2010 FIFA soccer world cup shares this message and looks like it is a part of this heath awareness drive. 

I liked the name of the campaign “The 3 fives”.  The awareness has been bucketed into three categories, namely safer food, healthy diet and appropriate physical activity.  For each of the three categories, five essential elements have been described.  I would like to highlight the five elements for each category:

Five keys to safer food:

  1. Keep Clean
  2. Separate raw and cooked
  3. Cook thoroughly
  4. Keep food at safe temperatures
  5. Use safe water and raw minerals

Five keys to healthy diet:

  1. Give your baby only breast milk for the six months of life
  2. Eat a variety of foods
  3. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits
  4. Eat moderate amount of fats and oils
  5. Eat less salt and sugar

Five keys to appropriate physical activity:

  1. If you are physically active, it is not too late to start regular physical activity and reduce sedentary activities
  2. Be physically active in as many ways as you can
  3. Do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on five or more days
  4. If you can enjoy some regular, vigorous-intensity physical activity for extra health and fitness benefit
  5. School age young people should engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intensity physical activity each day

Most of the information is intuitive, but if you are looking for details I would highly recommend you to go through the brochure in detail.  I have recently added some of the things list here as part of my daily routine and I know I need more improvement in my lifestyle.  You can see, world is going towards more and more preventive healthcare, wherein lifestyle changes to more healthy one is almost necessary and you want to be behind.
