Plastic surgery is a surgical procedure that is performed in both reconstructive and cosmetic or aesthetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery helps one to fix or bring to normalcy, when something is irregular on the body, such as a ripped earlobe, or a scar. On the other hand cosmetic surgery helps to improve one’s image and beauty. Plastic surgery benefits both young and old; psychologically, physically and emotionally disturbed people .
Recently an International organization ISAPS – The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, conducted a survey in the top 25 countries where cosmetic surgery is most popular. The survey brings very interesting facts, which were not expected, even by ISAPS. Let’s see the data that will give you a sneak peak into information on how many cosmetic procedures are performed across the globe and what are the top countries performing these procedures?
According to the latest survey, 17.5% of the cosmetic procedures were performed in the US and 14.3% in Brazil, whereas 12.7% of cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in China and 5.2% in India.
Foad Nahai, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Atlanta said that it comes with no surprise that the largest numbers of aesthetic procedures are carried in the United States and Brazil, but emerging economies like India and China are generating a lot wealth and this is something unexpected, as people in these economies are opting to spend their discretionary income on cosmetic surgeries.
The ISAPS Global Survey reveals top five surgical and non surgical procedures–
For the last ten years, the consensus has been that breast implantation was the most popular plastic surgery procedure. However, latest survey reveals a new trend:
- Liposuction represents – 18.8% of all surgical procedures
- Breast augmentation...
- blepharoplasty (upper or lower eyelid lift) – 13.5%
- rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) – 9.4%
- abdominoplasty (“Tummy Tuck”) – 7.3%
The top six countries for these surgical procedures are Brazil, the United States, China, Mexico, India and Japan.
Non- surgical procedures
- Toxins or neuromodulators injections (Botox, Dysport) – 32.7%
- Hyaluronic acid injections – 20.1%
- Laser hair removal – 13.1%
- Autologous fat injections (taking a patient’s fat from one location and transferring it in the same patient in another location) – 5.9%
- IP Laser treatment – 4.4%
The top countries where non surgical procedures were performed were the United States, Brazil, Mexico and China and to a lesser extent by Japan, Hungary, South Korea, India and Germany.
Though the reports come with great surprise for me as well, but there is no doubt that India and other South Asian countries are developing with very fast pace. As we see India has been tagged with “India an Emerging Economy” in many publications and that’s truth! The growing economy has attracted almost all international companies to venture into India. Indian people, mainly the top and middle class, are allured towards the branded products, latest fashion and their looks, more than ever. The emerging change in the economy and Indians perception are major factors pushing the businesses and surgical procedures to grow remarkably.
