J&J’s mobile health for mothers helps women in developing countries

The Text4Baby program is designed to provide education to pregnant women and new parents regarding their baby.  J&J is one of the founding sponsors of Text4Baby and has launched a health initiative for more than 20 million expectant mothers in China, India, Mexico, Bangladesh, South Africa and Nigeria.

About the Text4Baby program
If you are a expecting mother, you can text BABY (or BEBE for Spanish) to 511411, and you will receive free weekly cell phone messages about your own health and your baby, timed to the baby’s due date or birthday.  The service, Text4Baby, is a partnership with the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, the White House, numerous major mobile phone carriers, and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

  • The messages focus on a variety of topics critical to maternal and child health: birth defects prevention, immunization, nutrition, seasonal flu, mental health, oral health, and safe sleep among others.
  • Text4baby messages also connect women to early prenatal care as well as a variety of existing resources available to them.

About J&J new initiative complimentary to Text4Baby
J&J is working on big initiative for women and children in developing countries with a five year...

$200 million annual donation. One of the arms of this initiative includes a mobile health program, which is similar to Text4Baby.  J&J estimates that 1.1 billion women in China, India, Mexico, Bangladesh, South Africa and Nigeria have a mobile phone today and are likely to sign up for its newprogram, Mobile Health for Mothers.  The program includes:

  • free mobile text messages on prenatal health
  • appointment reminders
  • phone calls from health coaches

I think mobile services like Text4Baby are beneficial for women and children.  With growth of mobile technology and use, I am glad to see companies investing in such initiatives for the benefit of future generation.

Healthy Texting!
