Listen to your heart via iStethoscope Expert iPhone app

12

Transformation of iPhone, Android phones and other smartphones into diagnostic medical device is growing at a rapid rate.  CES 2011 was a good example, wherein we saw iPhone being used as blood pressure monitor, baby monitor and etc.  In 2010 Dr. Peter Bentley released an iPhone app called iStethoscope that gives your iPhone ability to measure heart beat.  Another app along these lines was developed and launched by Advanced Clinical Diagnostics (ACD, Inc), a Toledo, OH based company.  The app is called iStethoscope Expert.

iStethoscope Expert is available free at iTunes and gives your iPhone capability to listen to your heart, lung, and bowel sounds.  It appears that iStethoscope app from ACD, Inc has made some improvements over the iStethoscope app made from Dr. Bentley.  The expert app has a built-in noise canceler that will help amplify the sound of interest.

The good thing is, if your device does not have a microphone or if you are interested in enhancing the sound, you use attach CardioTech electronic stethoscope peripheral by Zetris for $24.99.

Main features of the app include:

  • Guides to heart, lung, and bowel sounds, including phonocardiograms, audio demonstrations and text explanations.
  • Sound interpreters that help determine the underlying...

    pathology of an abnormal sound.
  • tethoscope sound library including over 60 sounds.
  • Hear fetal heart sounds at 20 weeks.
  • Record, send, and save sounds for review.
  • Save and record sounds in phonocardiogram wav format.
  • Add heart and lung sound recordings to electronic medical records.

iStethoscope Expert app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. I think apps like iStethoscope Expert app will continue to improve and add features that would make easier for you to carry our basic diagnosis by using your smartphone.  I would encourage you to post your views on this app for continued improvement.

Totally bogus app! DO NOT BUY THE STETHOSCOPE that they offer! It’s a piece of crap and doesn’t work. They will NOT reply to emails. They have no phone number you can call. They don’t respond to anything (including dozens of emails and phone calls). Do not believe anything these guys say. They are also involved in many questionable publishing enterprises and was named in an internet scam book. THESE GUYS ARE CROOKS.

They also make it look like it’s coming out of the 32 pin connector, does not. It plugs into the headphone jack and sucks

Ugh! I wish I would have read this feedback before I ordered it. I received it yesterday and nearly busted an eardrum trying to get it to work.

I don’t think the company looks very legit, but their apps seem to be good. I got Stethoscope Expert, Psychiatry OnCall, and History and Physical Examination, all of which I’ve been happy with. I did get a stethoscope, too (off of someone on ebay), and I’m pleased with it. I’m glad it doesn’t go into the 32-pin connector port, which allows me to hook up to charge while still using it. It isn’t perfect, but it’s a huge step in the right direction. I have used it clinically, and this technology has been adopted by our clinical research group. I am sorry so many people have had such trouble. Our non-profit group would be happy to have any unwanted stethoscopes. We can sure use them.

I got the I stethoscope 2013 app and hooked up my own head phones by skull candy, I was able to hear the heart sounds, lung sounds and excellent bowel sounds! But what impressed me the most was that I was able to pick up my brachial artery pulse and my dorsalis pedis pulse which is to asses lower extremity circulation, you do have to be aware that you are basically using your microphone as an amplifier but it does work.I personally wouldn’t buy the stethoscope just use the inside the ear headphones. Also a great product is contec EKG stethoscope with sp02 it is awesome for $150 it well worth the money. I used it throughout my practicum and the physician I trained with loved it as well. Got it off eBay
