Marketside Grab and Go – Deli meat sold to Walmart recalled


Food and food products recall have been an ongoing process. We have not come out of the situation of egg recall that sickened more than 1200 people nationwide and ground beef recall tainted with E. coli O157:H7. There is another recall report issued by U.S. Department of Agriculture regarding 380,000 pounds of deli meats from the market. 

Deli meat tainted with Listeria monocytogenes
The deli meats are distributed to Walmarts nationwide by Buffalo, N.Y.-based company Zemco industries, and are used in packaged grab-and-go sandwiches. On Monday U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the contamination of deli meats with Listeria monocytogenes, a Gram-positive rod-shaped bacterium. Listeria affects primarily pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems.

dates and vendor. The recalled meat products carry various dates from June 18 to July 2, 2010, and have various “Use By” dates ranging from August 20 to September 10, 2010.  The vendor # on packages is “398412808” that also bear the USDA mark of inspection.



Symptoms of Listeriosis
There are no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of this product yet. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. In rare cases, listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirths, as well as potentially deadly infections in people with weakened immune systems. 

If you feel any of the symptoms, take an appointment with your doctor immediately. Do discard the contaminated products from your refrigerator and share the information with your friends and relatives to make them aware of the recent recall due to Listeria contamination.
