New wireless syringe infusion pump from Smiths’ Medical

A syringe infusion pump infuses fluids, medication or nutrients into a patient’s circulatory system. It is generally used intravenously. Subcutaneous, arterial and epidural infusions are occasionally used. Smith Medical got approval from FDA on their new wireless syringe infusion pump.

Infusion pumps can administer fluids in ways that would be impractically expensive or unreliable, if performed manually by nursing staff. For example, they can administer as little as 0.1 mL per hour injections (too small for a drip), injections every minute, injections with repeated boluses requested by the patient, up to maximum number per hour (e.g. in patient-controlled analgesia), or fluids whose volumes vary by the time of day.

Due to their ability of producing quite high but controlled pressures, they can inject controlled amounts of fluids subcutaneously (beneath the skin), or epidurally (just within the surface of the central nervous system- a very popular local spinal anesthesia for childbirth).

New Generation Wireless Syringe Infusion Pump
Smiths Medical, a leading global medical device manufacturer received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its new Medfusion® 4000 wireless syringe infusion pump with the PharmGuard® infusion management software suite. The new customizable system, which helps prevent medication errors, will allow health care providers to send and receive medication delivery information more efficiently.

It is the next-generation advancement of the Medfusion® 3500 syringe infusion pump, which is widely recognized for its accurate medication delivery to patients...

in critical care units, including neonatal and pediatric intensive care.

This upgraded version runs on Smiths’ proprietary PharmGuard software that allows easy management of infusion data and provides safety parameters to prevent incorrect dosing during anesthesia or in critical care areas. The new model provides wireless connectivity (802.11b/g), so that pump data can be managed remotely without having another wire in the OR.

It has wired Ethernet connectivity for efficient drug library, syringe and firmware management, eliminating the need to physically search for pumps and manually update them. The software is a scalable and upgradeable web-based application that enables the wireless collection, management, and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) reporting of patient infusion data to track trends in compliance with medication dosing and clinical best practices.
