Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women after non-melanoma skin cancer. It is the number one cause of cancer death in Hispanic women and second most common cause of death in white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women according to Central for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Various researchers have been involved in looking for the etiology, prevention, cure of the disease. Organizations like Susan G. Komen, National Breast Cancer Foundation and others are also striving hard for spreading awareness and providing help to sufferers.
Recently researchers from the University of Barcelona in Spain have found potential benefits of virgin olive oil on breast cancer tumors.
About the research
Research carried out with animal models demonstrated that Mediterranean olive oil exhibits protective effects against tumor cells compared to corn oil. Olive oil contains n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and several bioactive compounds such as antioxidants. Results demonstrated that olive oil slowed the growth of tumors by decreasing the activity of the oncogene p21Ras — the gene that drives uncontrollable cell production and stimulates tumor growth — and restraining the activity of specific proteins vital to the survival of tumor cells. Researchers also found that olive oil prevents DNA damage within the cells.
The study is published in the journal Carcinogenesis
Weissmann, editor-in-chief of the journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), which published the finding, said: “This study is ground-breaking because it shows that olive oil and a Mediterranean diet affect our bodies in a far more significant way than previously believed.”
Benefits of Olive Oil
Researcher Eduard Escrich recommended adding 50 ml, or 10 teaspoons of high quality, extra-virgin olive oil in daily diets. He suggested that only long-term use of olive oil can help lowering the prevalence of certain types of cancer and coronary diseases.
Mediterranean diet has previously been credited as the world’s Healthiest diet with protecting effects against all major diseases including cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Olive oil is one of the major ingredients of Mediterranean diet, which is accountable for it’s healthy nature.
