Quick nutrition tips to control Cancer

Anti-cancer-protein-dietCancer is a prominent killer of Americans-second only to heart disease and responsible for more than a half million deaths yearly. The good news is that some cancers are preventable. Up to 30 percent of all cancers are linked to poor diet. People can cut their risk of cancer by eating the right kinds of foods before, during, and after treatment. Controlling diet can help the patient feel better and stay stronger.

  • Eat at least five servings per day: Eat five or six small meals throughout the day rather than three large ones. The American Cancer Society recommends at least five servings each day.
  • Raw vegetable and vegetable juice: Eat more variety of fruits and vegetables (potato, yam, sweet potato, and cassava). In general, the most colorful fruits and vegetables (like deep greens of spinach, deep blues of blueberries, whites of onions and garlic) have the most nutrients.
  • Choose foods from other plant sources: Eat legumes or whole grains in every meal and limit amounts of refined grains like white bread and pasta.
  • Eat plenty of fiber: Fiber moves cancer-causing compounds out of the body before they can create harm. Foods rich in fiber are whole grains such as barley and oats, apples, bananas, blackberries beans, chick peas, lentils, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, and broccoli.
  • Partake of healthy fats: Healthy fats are considered good for health like Olive oil, for instance, has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats like sunflower, corn, and soybean oils and canola and olive oils.
  • Watch out for fat: Choose low-fat or non-fat milk and yogurt and low fat cooking methods like roasting, baking, broiling, steaming or poaching.
  • Take more proteins: Eat protein rich food than regular diet like Peanut butter crackers, yogurt and fruit, a hard-boiled egg and piece of toast.
  • Exercise care in food preparation and storage: Refrigerate or freeze leftover or unused foods, or consume them promptly. The Food Inspection and Safety Service of the USDA says that perishable food should not be left out unrefrigerated for longer than two hours.
  • Drink beverages during the day: Try to drink beverages between meals. Juice, soup, and other fluids can provide important calories and nutrients.
  • Fresh ginger about 30 minutes before eating also can take the edge off nausea.

  • Cut down on meat: Limit eating red meats (including beef, pork, goat and lamb) and processed meats in your diet, and be careful the meat you do eat is lean.
  • Reduce unhealthy dietary fat: Strictly avoid foods that are high in fat, like fast foods and processed foods.
  • Eliminate consumption of alcoholic beverages: Limit your alcohol consumption to two drinks for men and one for women per day or avoid alcohol altogether.
  • Limit high calorie foods: Pass up sugary drinks like soda, and avoid consumption of high-calorie foods, especially those low in fiber and rich in fat or added sugar. Foods high in fat or fiber make nausea last longer.
  • Restrict sodium intake: Limit consumption of salty foods and food processed with salt (sodium). Salt and salt-preserved foods are probably a cause of stomach cancer.
  • Avoid food that smells: Odors make nausea worse and foods served at room temperature rather than warm tend to have milder odors.
