Rx tips for computer related eye strain

Computer has revolutionized the communication industry as an easily assessable information source that puts you in touch with people all over the world in just few seconds.  One side computer has become one of the most essential part of your day to day life, and on the other hand computer comes with many health warnings such as it can make your neck ache, your head pound, your shoulders tense, and your eyes sore.  Eye strain, which is common among computer professionals, can be caused by poor posture, bad lighting, and an awkward workspace.  If you are one of those who are suffering with computer related eye strains, do practice these tips to keep your eyes safely fixed on the future.

eye_doctorSee an eye doctor: Don’t rely on drugstore computer glasses. Get a proper eye exam and a prescription customized for your eye.  According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), computer users should have an eye exam before they start working on a computer and once a year there after.

Take frequent breaks: Get up and do something else for about 5-15 minutes for every 45 minutes you spend at the computer.  According to NIOSH, discomfort and eye strain are significantly lower when you take five minutes “mini-break” throughout your work day instead of two 15 min breaks.

Think about blinking: When you stare at a screen, you don’t blink as often, and your eyes become dry. Blinking is very important as it rewets your eyes and hence avoids dryness and irritation. Studies show that dry eyes can lead to weak eyes, eye pain, headache, and dimmed vision.

theratearsDribble some drops: If you experience dry eye symptoms, discuss with your eye specialist. They can suggest you over the counter (OTC) lubricating eye drop or tear replacement drops like Thera Tears, Blink Tears, Tears Again, Refresh Tears Plus and more.

antiglare-screenGet rid of the glare: Make sure there is no light reflecting on your computer screen. Move lamps, put up window blinds, or buy anti glare screen for your computer screen.  If you wear prescription glasses, make sure they have an anti-reflective (AR) coating on the lenses. AR coating reduces glare of your eyeglass lenses.

Keep your monitor clean: Clean your computer or laptop screen often with a lint free cloth.

eyeexerciseExercise your eyes: Close your eyes and take a deep breath through your nose; hold it for around four seconds then exhale. Continue this deep breathing for 15 to 30 seconds. Perform this simple exercise several times a day.

work-stationMeasure the distance: Position your computer screen carefully. It should be 4-9 inches below eye level and 20 to 26 inches from your eyes.

Tweak your computer settings: If you are uncomfortable adjust the brightness, contrast, and font size until you find the best settings for your vision.  Choose a light screen with dark letters. This is easier on the eyes.

Whether you are e-mailing your grandkids, shopping, or tracing your family history, see your doctor if you develop tired, sore, or dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, difficulty in focusing, red, burning, or watery eyes and changes in how you see colors. I personally applied these tips to relax my eyes and with confidence I can admit that these are “must do” tips for everyone sitting on computers.

Healthy vision!

Our eyes and vision were designed for viewing distance as hunters and gatherers, and not for ongoing near work as required by regular computer use. As a result, Computer Eye Strain is becoming one of the major eye complaints heard by eye doctors today.

Symptoms can include increased myopia, blurred vision, headaches, slow refocusing, difficulty concentrating, neck, shoulder and back pain

Eye strain can be reduced significantly by taking regular breaks from the computer, resting your eyes, stretching and doing eye exercises.

For a demo of 3 great eye exercises by Dr. Grossman, one of the Country’s leading behavioral optometrists, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W10j2fL0hy0

Also, a few research studies show that supplementing with 6mg per day of astaxanthin per day significantly improved eye strain at week 2 and 4 of the test period.
