Once thought to be totally insuperable to cure, autoimmune disorders now are deriving huge attention of scientists as the medical science step by step is proceeding towards finding more reliable solutions to completely cure patients suffering with autoimmune diseases. Bone marrow transplant is now under consideration as a promising procedure for relieving patients anguished by Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 400,000 Americans and 2.1 million people worldwide have MS.

About the study

  • This study published in the journal NEUROLOGY, performed in Greece, consists of pool of 35 patients suffering with MS. These patients received the stem cell transplant
  • As per the protocol, firstly, the dysfunctional immune cells in the bone marrow of patients are completely killed using chemotherapy and then healthy stem cells are infused back replacing the wiped-out cells
  • After the stem cell transplant 25% of the patients did not see the disease progressing
  • 44% of patients in the active inflammatory phase of the disease, having active lesions before the transplant did not see it any further progression of the diseases & 10% of the patients who went on the treatment without actually being completely diagnosed for MS also remained disease free .

Stem cell replacement has...

been used in cancer treatment. However, its utility in treating MS is still under evaluation. Dr Richard Burt from Northwestern University, Chicago in the US said, “It’s the only therapy to date that has been shown to reverse neurologic deficits,” testifying how vital could this therapy prove in future.

Researchers worldwide are recruiting patients to study and establish more concrete, reproducible and replicable results to cure MS. If you know patients who would want to be a part of this study then on behalf of KAH let them know about the above studies and help them to take a leap forward towards healthy living.
