Summer Infant Video baby monitors recalled for strangulation deaths

13

Baby monitors use to be simple walkie-talkie type devices that were great to hear your baby’s activities, when you are sitting in another room. Baby monitor technology has caught up and you can watch your baby sleeping in another room through video baby monitors, and furthermore Withings smart baby monitor released one that can be integrated with your iPhone.  If you own a video baby monitor from Summer Infant Inc, you should be aware of its recall.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled 1.7 million, Summer Infant video monitors, owing to a strangulation hazard if placed too close to a crib.  CPSC commented that two infants died by strangulation with an electrical cord.  A 10 month old girl was strangled in Washington DC in March 2010 and in Nov 2010, six month boy died in South Carolina.

Summer Infant Inc is planning to add a new label on the video baby monitors and proper instructions to install the monitors.  CPSC asked parents...

to look at the location of the cord of the monitor and make sure it not too close to the baby, like on the crib rail.

The question I have is what took so long for recall of video baby monitor?  It’s been more than three months that second death occurred due to this baby monitor.  It is sad that it took two deaths for Summer Infant Inc to realize the hazard of video monitor’s cord.

It seems to me that ANY device with an electrical cord near the baby crib would potentially be a hazard…why would any parent put such a risky thing as an electrical cable within reach of a baby?? This doesn’t make any sense to me that it would be recalled when clearly (to me at least) it’s parents who aren’t thinking about the OBVIOUS and instead think that “oh…it’s a baby monitor”…it MUST be safe.

WAKE UP PARENTS!! You are responsible for your own infants!!

agreed. unfortunately, common sense is not so common. i feel terrible that 2 infants died…it’s tragic…but i’m amused that the product is being recalled so that they can place a new warning on it and “proper instructions” for installation. basically they aren’t changing the product at all because the product isn’t dangerous. they are recalling it so they can add “instructions for dummies” because stupid parents are dangerous.

Why in the world would you put a baby near anything that could hurt them.
Put the crib away from everything they can reach and grab I don’t care what
it is. It is a parents jobs to protect their children. When they are in their
cribs anyway aren’t parents going in every few minutes checking on their
babies anyway. Look at the room where baby will be and put the babies
crib away from any and everything that they can reach and go and check on
then all the time even when sleeping.
Parents they rely on you to protect them. Anything they can reach for or
grab is a no no for them and for you parents. Always go and check on your
    baby.

I really feel sorry for the parents but I don’t understand this at all. Electrical cords near babies… who would do ths? Are they going to recall electrical outlets on the baseboards of apartments incase some parent plugs in a lamp . It is the parents responsibility to ensure all cords are out of reach of children. This is obvious

I am sorry that 2 babies have died, but how is that the fault of the company?
Parents should have enough sense to check cords and pay attention to
where they are placed. They are the ones who placed it there, not the company.
I’m sorry, but this country is strangling because no one wants to take the
responsibilty of their actions. Accidents happen, but let’s be careful before
pointing fingers. My prayers are with the families of these babies and may God
give them comfort and peace in their losses.
